Life on Acreage, and Semi-Retirement...

This is moi. I live in a world inhabited by paranoid pets, mad medicos, some family and one or three friends. I have found in day-to-day living that really strange things can be said, done or experienced in and around the above characters-and characters is the operative word.

Fr'instance, there is a cockatoo who reprimands the two dogs that mooch around the place and who joins in any conversation that's going on around her. There are some medicos with really off the wall and dry senses of humour.

My family do and say some crazy things and I must admit that I have been known to contribute to these as well! Hmm.

I have a collection of grandchildren, which was added to three weeks ago, but more about them later. I picked up a couple of daughters in my life's journey, who are blessings in every way as far as I am concerned. I also managed to collect a husband or so, but discarded them along the way...I couldn't fit them into the blessings category.

Now, as I mentioned in my profile, I'm a cat lover and have had several felines possess me in the past. The current inhabitant is as bossy as any cat I've come across and he will feature quite a lot in these pages. I have learnt to speak cat and it works just as well as human, but sometimes the human "No" in a very loud voice is the only thing that will stop some offending action.

I'm originally from New Zealand and so I still have a lot of family in that country. My wonderful 87-year-old mother is still going strong (thanks to the glasses of wine quaffed each evening). They broke the mould after she was created-she is truly an original. However, she is a real wonder at getting her "mords wixed" and we have been in convulsions of laughter at times thanks to Mum's bloopers and some of these are actually unprintable! Which makes them doubly funny, because one thing Mum is, is a lady and profane language does not feature in her vocabulary-well, not too much anyway.

When I was in my very early teens, my parents divorced (oh, shame and scandal - as it was in the 50s). Anyway, a few years later Mum remarried and I acquired a couple of extra brothers. I already had two and really didn't need any more. However, I had no say in the matter. As it turns out, I'm especially close to one stepbrother who lives in Queensland also, about 90 minutes drive away. I am also close to my youngest sibling, even though he is still in New Zealand. I have no sisters and am situated in the middle of all this testosterone, an unenviable place indeed.

As I mentioned in the title, I'm on acreage and very picturesque it is, too. It's an unusual situation in that I live in a granny flat attached to the main house, so the address for me and the owners is the same. That has created problems for me at times. One of which was, when the place was sold and the current owners were organising power, phone, gas changeover etc, I ended up with no hot water or cooking facilities over the long Easter break. Someone at the gas company didn't bother to ask about whether the inhabitant in the flat was staying on and just closed the account down. (Hellooo, different name and account number). Consequently, my supply was not replenished and I had to wash my hair over the bathroom basin and just have sponge downs until business resumed. Ok, that's not such a hardship normally, but the temperature was rather chilly at that time in the morning and I had trouble getting the soap out from between the goosebumps! It didn't help that I also had guests staying...fortunately, I have a microwave and had precooked meals in the freezer we could use.

Anyway, that's about it for today. Hope it hasn't been too mundane and boring. I promise to improve, I really, really do...so don't give up on me just yet.
