Summer's Coming!

Well, for the first time since last summer, I have my ceiling fans going. Considering it's officially only spring and summer doesn't start till December, it's going to be a hot one (actually, what's new!). As usual, the doom merchants are prophesying cyclones, really bad hailstorms, drought, bushfires and other pestilences. But, hey, we get that every summer!

I take each day as it comes and if it's a lovely hot day - great. If it's a storm or cyclone - well it's water and will alleviate the drought and hopefuly there won't be too much damage. If we don't get rain today, maybe we will tomorrow. I'm not going to worry about things until they actually happen.

I have decided that Oscar's near miss with death has given him a permanent personality change. It seems as if by dropping several of his lives, he has decided to have more fun. Today, he was sitting on the bed with me. The end of his (now) skinny tail was twitching invitingly and he was watching it very intently, then he suddenly pounced on it! It was as if it was something quite separate from his body. Of course, I laughed and said, "Oscar, you silly cat!" He looked at me with a dopey look on his face and replied with a high pitched "Mrrrreeh?" Later on, we had our usual tussle over the computer chair and again he gave me a look but this time a disgusted one and said "Prrrowerrrr!" in a lower tone, as if to say, "Don't disturb me, I was here first." My reply? "Tough!" This happens regularly...

I said in a comment on the apple season that I would post a recipe for a yummy loaf which uses apples, so here it is.

Oaty Apple Loaf

125 g butter
1tsp baking soda
1tspn mixed spices
1/2 tspn cinnamon
1 cup brown sugar
2 apples, grated
1 cup sultanas
1 cup water
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup rolled oats
1 1/2 cups plain flour
3 tspns baking powder

Put butter, soda, spices, cinnamon, sugar, apples, sultanas and water into a large saucepan. Bring to the boil, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Beat in eggs and rolled oats. Sift flour and baking powder into the saucepan. Stir to combine. Pour mixture into a well-greased 22 cm loaf tin. Bake at 180 degrees celcius for 45 minutes or until the loaf springs back when lightly touched. Leave in tin for 10 minutes before turning out onto a cooling rack.

This is a great keeper and can also be frozen. Enjoy!

Robyn,
Our siamese cat, (cinnamon or big brown bear) plays a game with himself regularly. He noses his way under a throw rug so that his head and front legs are protruding out of one end and his tail out the other. And, yes you guessed it; he pounces on his tail as it twitches, just as if it were a separate entity.

Cats are funny creatures, aren't they !?!
I think it is going to be a hot summer, too, as we had some amazing weather recently, and it was very hot up Broken Hill way.
Have a great week.
Take care, Meow
