Dark Days for Australia

Imagine someone deliberately setting a fire knowing there's a distinct possibility that people will be killed. The weather is hot and dry with howling winds...perfect bushfire weather. But someone is more interested in demonstrating the power they think they have and they set a fire. In an instant that fire is out of their or anyone's control. It races through bush, through farms and houses, through communities, leaving heartbreak and devastation in its wake.

Then, when volunteers and home owners are battling futilely against those flames, another arsonist strikes somewhere a few kilometres away and sets another conflagration in motion. Again, it races it's deadly course, swallowing everything in its path. Trees, houses, animals, people...

This is what the people of Victoria experienced last weekend. With the death toll climbing...last count over 180...it's not arson, it's mass murder. Some of the communities have become crime scenes with blue police tape keeping the crime scene intact from inadvertant contamination. People not allowed to return to their homes, or what's left of them, until the police forensic investigation is completed. All this, the work of two or three seriously criminally inclined individuals.

It's a dark time in Australian history.

An addendum:

The scumbags are crawling out from the slime in which they live. That's right...looters, vandals and graffiti vandals have slid out...at night, of course. They're too gutless to do anything else...it's a pity they weren't incinerated. To add to these lowest of the low, more likely murderers have set other fires. Can you believe such people inhabit our planet?

I've been following these stories as much as I can because of all the blogger friends I've made with blogging...it's terrible, it's sad, it's devastating...and as you say it's mass murder.

I have been in despair while all this has unfolded and the fact that not all of was at the hand of Mother Nature is incomprehensible. Mother Nature I respect....these dirtbags are beyond belief.

My hope is that they set the fires, then underestimated how quickly it would spread and got caught in their own evil trap. Now that would be sweet justice.

Such wise words Robyn. I could'nt have put it better myself.

I don't know what else to say...

I was raised to always find the positive in any negativity. I just cannot find anything positive out of this what so ever! I could say that communities have banded together to support each other and that people have learnt how to better protect their homes if there is a next time. It just doesn't compete with what I am feeling right now.

I wish I had some good news to tell you... but there is still nothing... and probably won't be for months.

Lots of love, Nic xox

Wow, that's horrible Robyn.... I hope they catch all those scumbags! Sadly people just don't think about the consequences of their actions. And those looters.... idiots! I hope for a just conclusion in this tragedy.

I remember the opertunist bastards who did this in Greece.
I think they should be tied up to a tree ahead of the fire theyr started and let them enjoy their art first hand

It is so terrible to hear that people start these fires on purpose that end up causing so much destruction. Most of our fires in California start naturally or by accident, but a few really destructive ones were started on purpose. They should suffer the way those in the path or their destruction do.
