Oops!

I insulted someone tonight...and they let me know!

I'll start at the beginning. I'd had a couple of phone calls from call centres tonight...regardless of the fact that I have registered with the Government's "Do Not Call" register. I have a phone with an LCD and either the phone number of the caller comes up, or if it's a silent number (ex directory) the word "private" comes up. The majority of call centre calls come up as "private", as did the particular call I'm going to tell you about.

This was the third call of the evening that came up on the screen as private. I picked up the phone and said hello and there was silence...which also happens with call centre calls, especially if it's a computer generated call. So I said something rude and hung up. The phone rang again immediately, and I let it go through to Message Bank.

After a few minutes, out of curiosity, I lifted the receiver to check if a message had gone through. It had, it had the distinctive dial tone sound that indicates a message is left. I thought it may have been my daughter as she has a silent number and knows I won't pick up. I dialled the Message Bank number and this male voice says, "Thanks very much for hanging up on me. I really, really appreciated that. I'll ring you back later."

I'm now totally mystified. I don't know the voice. I replayed the message and couldn't get the name of the caller, but I'm not even sure if he left one. I rang my daughter and told her what happened and she went into gales of laughter. It's obviously someone who knows my number because they immediately called straight back. Unless, of course, they originally misdialled and then hit redial.

I'm not sure whether to feel embarrassed or not...if it was someone I knew, I probably would be embarrassed but at least, if I knew who it was, I could ring back and apologise. But I haven't a clue! Curiouser and curiouser...

I have the same reaction as your daughter ! I laugh !! If it's somebody who knows you he will laugh too, can happen in the best families. But now I am getting curious too maybe you will know it today ! I'll check tomorrow ! Don't you have an ex lover somewhere, lol ?

Maybe it's an "antique" old lover and with the years his voice has changed ??

Gidday Robyn,

Ah yes, the "Do not Call" register. I have registered with them, and I'm not saying that it's working but I haven't had a call for a while. Mind you some of these call centre people can be bloody rude and you sometimes have to be rude and hang up on them.

Well, we're all on tenterhooks now! Will he call back? Is he a mystery man? A secret admirer? Will you ever find out who it was?

HA HA HA

I have done something similar and its those telemarketers fault.
I am sure they will call back and you will both have a good laugh.

How embarassing! I have caller ID so can check numbers to see who has called. If it isn't a number I know I just don't worry about it.

he he he...how funny!

Who is this mysterious man? And if he *is* a suitor (don't you love that word - so old-fashioned and gallant!), then does he have a sense of humour? Because if not I can't imagine you doing anything but rebuffing him!

I'm waiting with bated breath to find out.... please tell us when you know!

I wouldn't worry about it too much, Robyn, if I were you. If he's not rung you back by now, it obviously wasn't important or someone you knew.

Those calls are very frustrating and I must admit they anger me...I slam the phone down.

Nothing to feel embarrassed about. I have my phone set so that if some caller has blocked their telephone number from caller ID, an AT&T voice informs them that I will not take the call. Should I feel embarrassed for blocking ‘em? Ha!

Not to worry! A friend will understand and somebody who isn't a friend? Who cares! Phones are a plague. I hardly ever answer mine. I won't let it control my life! Now don't let it intimidate you!

Hi Robyn, I was sorely tempted to pretend it was I who had called you back after being told bluntly what to do.
Fortunately sanity prevailed and I resisted the temptation.... so I'm still alive!!!!

Hahahaha ... that's something that would happen to me. I'm usually rude to telemarketers !!
Good luck finding out if it was someone interesting.
Take care, Meow
