Our Winter Weather

I've had one or two comments asking questions like how cold it actually is here in the winter. In a normal winter the average day time temperature is 22 degrees C. The night time temps can get to about 8 C.

However, this is the longest and coldest period we've had since 1941...that was before I was born! The lowest night time temps in the city have been around 3 to 4 degrees C. Where I live is about 30 km inland and our temps have come down to below zero. The day time temps have been around 18 to 19 C. It's a very dry cold and when you're outside first thing in the morning it feels as if you're breathing in razor blades. On top of those low temps, we've had bitterly cold southerly winds so the wind chill factor brings the temp down even further.

Now I know that to those of you in cooler climes that is not very cold, but we're a subtropical region, for heaven's sake. We're not used to this! Even Far North Queensland, which is tropical, has had cooler temperatures than usual. What we're all hoping though, is that because it's a colder winter than what we've been used to for the last 10 years, we will get a normal wet...which means lots of rain...here's hoping.

So, that's what I've been grizzling about, because I loathe the cold. Give me summer anytime...yep, humidity, high temperatures, the lot...I love it! One of the things I don't like about winter is that I have to wear too many clothes. Honestly, when you go to the loo it takes half-an-hour to get dressed again...ridiculous! As for stripping off and jumping in the shower...absolute torture. Yeah, I know, I'm a wuss. I don't care...I hate the cold and that's that!

Okay, okay, point taken - we're living in different parts of the world and gain different habits and likings. When you have +20C in the summer, we're having -20C and I love it:-) I haven't looked at undressing as a problem (more like half the fun:-) but then again good cloths is necessary to survive.

A part of it might also be that I love snow and skiing and then you soon learn to cope with the cold weather.

I also love the significant four season in Scandinavia. From winter time when the nature goes into hibernation to fully summer when all wakes up again. Then you really learn to appreciate the few month of sunny and warm weather and much less cloths on:-)

But by all means: When you visit Scandinavia, make sure it's in the summer time (your winter time - the world is strange:-). That is if you don't want to make snow angels and have a snow ball match with me LoL

No, that doesn't sound very cold, but then, I'm used to much colder temperatures. Anything above -20C isn't very cold. ;) Although my mom prefers temperatures between -10C and +20C. Anything under -20C is too cold, and anything above +30C is too hot. Fortunately, temps only get that extreme for a couple of weeks at the most, in winter and summer, respectively.

For those people from the US that don't get it (and that is all of us since there are only two nations in the world that don't use metric and the US is one of them), I translate:

In a normal winter the average day time temperature is 72°F. The night time temps can get to about 46°F.
and
The lowest night time temps in the city have been around 37°F to 39°F. Where I live is about 19 miles inland and our temps have come down to below 32°F. The day time temps have been around 64°F to 66°F.

My comment: It is the middle of summer here and you are now officially warmer, in the middle of winter, than we have been this summer. Wingnut is freezing at swimming lessons. It has gotten to 70°F (21°C) maybe a couple times in July. I think we'll come to your neck of the woods to get a proper summer this year during winter.

What are your summer temps?
This is fascinating.

I found you on Walkers blog and was so glad to find a fellow Aussie. I am from Adelaide and we are also experiencing an unusually cold winter. I love the cold and look forward to it every year. What part of Qld are you in? I was up on the Sunshine Coast in March and found the humidity unbearable I'm afraid.

also: our backlinks don't work
I have backlinked to you because I blogged about your post. Clicking your backlink below does not work.

But you're better off than me because I can't figure out how to get any backlinks on my blog!

post - well done and keep it up. There are many degrees of cold - ours
isn't as low as some that have tons of snow, but then they don't get our high summer temps. I grizzle equally in bothe the cold and heat.
Thanks for your comments. Glad you liked the Angel thingo and the flea joke etc. Take care my friend and keep warm. Love, Merle.

My human grew up in Surfers Paradise which is quite near to where you are. She says she never had to wear a jumper or a coat but over here in Wimbledon you never know which way the weather will go. One minute it's hot, then it's cold and wet. A bit like Melbourne I guess. FAZ

Here in the U.S. we’re have record heat while you on the other side of the Equator are having record cold. Wouldn’t it be superb if we could give you some of our heat and you could give us some of your cold?

I'm with you. I don't like the cold either, however I'm not fond of high temps so I guess I just can't be pleased. One good thing about the cold temps here is that it kills off a lot of bad insects and reptiles and that sure makes my life easier.

Gidday Robyn,
Nope winter is much better than summer. Sure you might have to put on my clothes to keep warm, but when it's so bloody hot in summer you can strip down to your birthday suit (not a good sight, and would put a lot of people in therapy for a long time seeing this sight) and you'd still not get cool...so there!!!!
